Traffic struggles through heavy floodwaters in the Kelapa Gading neigborhood of Jakarta. In early February, torrential rains caused the worst flooding in over a decade in the Indonesian capital, as floodwaters reached four meters in some areas and left only the tops of roofs visible above the surface. The flooding killed over 50 people and displaced more than 300,000. With hundreds of thousands still living in cramped emergency shelters, bus stations, bridge underpasses, and sidewalks, health officials share growing concerns about the spread of water-born diseases including diarrhea and cholera. And as the floodwaters slowly recede, the city will be faced with the daunting task of cleaning up debris and garbage. Jakarta, Indonesia. Image: Danzer_030055.
